Hiking Jenny Lake Trail
Jenny Lake, another one of the more popular trails in the Park. The Park recently renovated the entire Jenny Lake area to make it more accessible for those who may not be able to hike. At Jenny you can simply go to one of the new overlooks to get a great view of Jenny Lake or you can hike the entire Jenny Lake Loop, or just hike to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point. To cut some mileage out of the hike it’s fun to take the boat shuttle across the lake (there is a fee for the shuttle). Taking the shuttle is a good idea if you’re heading to Lake Solitude because it cuts about 3 miles off hike making it only a 15 miler instead of an 18 miler.
It’s about an 8 mile hike around the lake with only some small elevation gains. Depending on the time of day and time of year there can be plenty of wildlife along the trail.
Bears at Lake Solitude
My fun hiking experiences are almost always involving bears. I love bears more than anything on this earth, except for Bon Jovi. On one summer hike I was coming back from Lake Solitude, and I just happened to have a smudge on my sunglasses. So I took my sunglasses off to wipe them off, and sure enough, 20 feet in front of me was a black bear cub. Mama was to the left about 50 feet away, so it was quite the exciting experience. Mama just gathered baby and moved off the trail for me, but it was a pretty cool experience to be that close to a bear. Always safely, always carrying bear spray. As cute as they are, they are wild animals and deserve the utmost respect and must always be given their space!
I also was once charged by a Mama Moose in Cascade Canyon. Moose are scarier than bears! They don’t see well and can be pretty cranky. I was hiking along the trail and came across a calf. Next thing I know mama is coming down the hill. I got behind a boulder and got my bear spray out (yes- it works on moose!) but luckily she stopped. I make sure now I give moose plenty of room and have often bushwacked my way around them if they’re too close to the trail.
Hi this is Carol. Thanks for reading Carol’s corner and remember love is Bon Jovi, bears and hiking in Jackson Hole.
